Jim L. Bowyer

Jim L. BowyerDr. Bowyer is Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering. He is an Elected Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science and President of Bowyer & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm focused on helping organizations improve environmental performance. In addition, he is Director of the Responsible Materials Program at Dovetail Partners, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides authoritative information about the impacts and trade-offs of environmental decisions, including consumption, land use, and policy alternatives.

Bowyer devoted more than 36 years to teaching and research at the University of Minnesota, where he focused on biomaterials science, life cycle assessment, and global raw material trends. For more than a decade, he has worked as an environmental consultant in his own company and with Dovetail Partners, Inc. Over the course of his career, he has also gained invaluable on-the-ground experience by working as a forest aide, firefighter, timber cruiser, and on wilderness area trail patrols in the national forests of Wyoming and Colorado.

He has served as President of the Forest Products Society and of the Society of Wood Science and Technology, as Vice President of the Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials (an association of fourteen North American Universities organized to conduct life cycle assessments of renewable materials and products), and as Board Member and Chairman of the Tropical Forest Foundation (with programs in Brazil, Guyana, Indonesia, and Gabon).

Bowyer has published widely on the topics of life cycle assessment, carbon tracking and reporting, bioenergy, green building standards, and environmental policy. He is co-author of Forest Products and Wood Science: An Introduction, and author of six book chapters and over 400 scientific articles. His latest book, The Irresponsible Pursuit of Paradise, dissects the unawareness, denial, and hypocrisy that allow developed nations to ignore the environmental impacts of materials extraction in less developed nations while at the same time living a high consumption lifestyle made possible by that extraction.

He speaks on the environmental aspects of forestry, wood use policies and practices, and tropical deforestation. Widely recognized for his technical expertise, he can address life cycle assessment, carbon tracking and reporting, bioenergy, and green building standards. He discusses forestry-related topics in the context of global concerns including environmental policy, consumption, population and economic growth, and sustainable development.
