Dr. Bowyer is Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering. He is President of Bowyer & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm focused on helping organizations improve environmental performance and a Senior Contributor, Dovetail Partners, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides authoritative information about the impacts and trade-offs of environmental decisions, including consumption, land use, and policy alternatives.
Bowyer devoted more than 36 years to teaching and research at the University of Minnesota, where he focused on biomaterials science, life cycle assessment, and global raw material trends. For more than a decade, he has worked as an environmental consultant in his own company and with Dovetail Partners, Inc. Over the course of his career, he has also worked as a forest aide, firefighter, timber cruiser, and on wilderness area trail patrols in the national forests of Wyoming and Colorado. He has served as an Executive Board Member and Chairman of the Tropical Forest Foundation (with programs in Brazil, Guyana, Indonesia, and Gabon).
Bowyer has published widely on the topics of life cycle assessment, carbon tracking and reporting, bioenergy, green building standards, and environmental policy. He has authored several books and a number of book chapters, and over 400 scientific articles. His latest book, The Irresponsible Pursuit of Paradise, dissects the unawareness, denial, and hypocrisy that allow developed nations to ignore the environmental impacts of materials extraction in less developed nations while at the same time living a high consumption lifestyle made possible by that extraction.
He speaks on resource-related topics in the context of domestic and global issues regarding consumption, population and economic growth, environmental policy, ethics, and sustainable development.
