Co-author of PreFab Green, Michelle Kaufmann was called the Henry Ford of manufactured green homes by Sierra magazine in 2007. She pioneered modular, factory-built dwellings that are inexpensive and environmentally friendly.
A full-size replica of her Glidehouse™ home was built and displayed at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC as part of the exhibit “The Green House,” and a fully-functioning 3-story mkSolaire™ home was displayed as part of the “Smart Home: Green + Wired” exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. Her work has also been on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Vancouver Art Center.
Her company, Michelle Kaufmann Designs, was named Top Firm of 2008 by Residential Architect magazine and received the Social Venture Network’s 2008 Innovation Award. Other honors include being named to Business 2.0 magazine's list of "100 People Who Matter Now,” receiving the National Association of Home Builders' Green Building Award for the 2009 Advocate of the Year, and being named one of "The Green 50" by Inc. magazine.
She has been the focus of extensive media attention, including appearances on the Sundance Channel, HGTV, the Discovery Channel’s Planet Green, and her work has been covered in magazines including Time, Smithsonian, Town & Country, Dwell, and Sunset.
She holds an MA in architecture from Princeton University and worked as an associate with internationally renowned architects Frank Gehry and Robert Graves before launching her own firm in 2002.
