An arborist, fire ecologist and urban forester, he has 30 years experience in park and urban forest restoration and management. He writes "Ask the Arborist," a column for the San Francisco Chronicle, which mixes humor with public education about arboriculture, sustainable urban forestry, and the benefits of urban trees.
Moritz advises clients ranging from homeowners to federal government agencies on issues ranging from the conservation of large forested landscapes to the health of a single tree. He has published widely on fire prevention through fuels management, especially on the urban/wildland interface. A member of the Society of American Foresters and the International Society of Arboriculturists, he was Visiting Professor of Silviculture at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. He is certified as an expert witness on tree issues in 13 California counties.
