Model, spokesperson, and activist Summer Rayne Oakes uses her image and expertise to focus mainstream attention on environmentally and socially conscious clothing and fashion. She has been the face for such campaigns as Levi’s national “501 Day” of volunteerism, the launch of organic Replay jeans, and the “Be Carbon Neutral” jewelry initiative. Her book Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty charts the eco-friendly fashion world and showcases green designers, materials, and firms.
Oakes is a resident expert and frequent program host on Discovery Network’s PlanetGreen channel. She is editor at large of Lucire, an international fashion magazine, and she publishes S4, a quarterly newsletter for decision makers within the fashion industry. She has appeared in such print media as the Christian Science Monitor, Elle, French Vogue, GQ, and The New York Times, and on TV venues including CNN, Fox Business, MTV, Bravo, and Sundance, along with National Public Radio.
She is a Udall environmental scholar, National Wildlife Federation Fellow, and United Nations U.S. Partnership Youth Emissary. While studying natural resources and entomology at Cornell, she co-authored peer-reviewed, published papers on waste management. It was also at Cornell that she was recruited as a model by StockinGirl, a high-end leg wear and stockings maker with an interest in sustainability, opening her distinctive, hybrid professional path.
Oakes has been recognized as a “Green All Star” (Outside magazine), a “Model Citizen” (Vanity Fair), a “Young Person Who Rocks” (CNN online), one of the "Top 20 Trendsetters under 40" (Amica Magazine), and as “The Hottest GIrl in Green” (Earth First, 2008). In 2006 she hosted Eco 4 the World, a 13-episode Singaporean documentary television series in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program, featuring positive environmental stories from around the world.
Oakes heads her own production and consulting firm, SRO, and is a partner at the strategic consulting firm, Group SJR, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Group SJR advises and represents clients from the fashion and environmental worlds both on-camera and off.
